My work is about the slow build rather than the quick payoff. I engage daily with the power of language to create beauty and meaning. At the same time, my work is driven by truth and the search for it – the raw, elemental and emotional truth.
While I am a conscientious student of craft and love to experiment with form, I believe art is not only about the container, but about what is contained. There must be something there that matters.
The written work that has been life-changing for me is marked by both precision and mystery. By precision I mean something that a reader experiences as if the thing is actually happening to him, or remembers exactly when and where she found. By mystery I mean that a work has more in it than can be expressed in a neat summation. I am interested in the kind of books that readers are drawn back to again and again.
